“You are that kid!”
At the time I am having this conversation with my daughter, we are both sitting in the kitchen of her student apartment, chatting about all kinds of things, from her university life to relationships in general. It is one of those special moments a mother treasures with her adult daughter.
At one point, my daughter looks at me and says, feeling concerned, “You haven’t blogged much lately. Why?”
At first, I am surprised she even noticed. After all, i am not aware she is even reading my stuff online. But feeling her inquiring gaze upon me, I share with her the times I think my blog sounds irrelevant.
But instead of telling me to get a grip or to toughen up, my daughter genuinely shares with me the following story:
“You are that kid!”
“Remember when you were a kid and the teacher asked a tough question to the class? We have all been in that situation. We all know there is at least one kid in the classroom who might know the answer. Yet, that kid will most likely not raise their hand, afraid to be bullied, afraid to be seen as a ‘know-it-all’ even. We know though it is not true. Here’s my thinking. If we all raised our hand at the same time, if we all became that kid, we would see how ridiculous it is to think someone is better than us. The thing is, we are afraid.”
I looked at her silently, and she continued, “You are that kid! You are the one who raises her hand and tries to answer the tough questions. If you stop raising your hand, how will kids like me ever learn how to raise our hand with you?”
Tears came to my eyes. My daughter had reminded me how important it is to be that kid who raises their hand in the classroom.
Thank you for listening.
May that kid in you shine brightly, always.
